Every year, we help hundreds of people make better lives for themselves.
Even people whose lives are so messed up, they think it’s hopeless.
And people who are worried about what’s happening to them and want to stop it before it’s a disaster.

All of these people found within themselves a sliver of hope, just big enough to hang on to. They were able to trust, just a little. We provided the tools, but they put in a lot of hard work, that was on them. And they got their lives back.
We’ll help you hands-on with issues involving drugs and alcohol, mental well-being, the justice system and building a better life. We have specialist services for youth and Indigenous people, that are based on acknowledgment and respect.
You won’t have to do it alone, but it is up to you to do it.

Making the call
Don’t want to be quizzed and transferred? When you call you’ll most probably be answered by a receptionist. Simply say,
“Can I speak with a client counsellor, please”.
You might add,
“This is my first call.”
Your call will be put through to the next available counsellor, you won’t have to give any details.
If you don’t say it’s your first call, the receptionist will ask you if you have contacted Hope about this matter before, and then who you dealt with. They will try to connect you with the same person, so they don’t have to ask you questions you’ve been through before, or at least inform a new counsellor that there will be an existing file for you.
We want to handle your call quickly, confidentially and without stress.
Who you’ll talk with
Hope employs qualified, experienced professional counsellors. We resource them properly and ensure ongoing training and professional development.
Perhaps the most important thing you should know about who you’ll talk with is why they are here: to help people solve issues and improve their quality of life. We’re not for profit. We are on your side and we succeed when you succeed.
We have a procedure that ensures any complaints about services we deliver are acted on, both to resolve the issue and to learn how to avoid similar problems in the future.
What we want is for you to have a better quality of life.
Your first interview
If we are going to help you, we need know about you. The information you give us is confidential.
Sometimes when people are dealing with authorities they hedge their answers. Or lie. Because they think that the truth will work against them.
But we won’t report what you say to Centrelink or to the ATO or to your bank or your employer.
Our ability to help you will be restricted, maybe even defeated, if you don’t tell us what’s really going on.
So, please understand that the information we ask for is needed, that it will be held in confidence and that we will use it to help you.
Sometimes people even lie to themselves, by refusing to acknowledge the real situation. How many drinks. What drugs. How they really feel.
Your first interview will seek to clarify the issues for you, so that we can focus on helping you resolve them. The things that are hardest to talk about are usually at the core of what has to be fixed, so you can have a better life. You’ll be asked to have hope and a little trust: take the leap and tell. Whatever happens next, you will feel better for making that step.
What happens next depends on the issues you need to deal with and how well positioned you are to make changes.
For some people, a couple of counselling sessions that help them get everything into focus are all that is needed.
For others, there may be weeks or months of intensive work, perhaps in a residential care setting, with long term support after that, including building a support network of friends and family as well as professionals.
Hope delivers a wide range of services, especially around drugs and alcohol and youth and Indigenous issues. We work with many other specialists service providers, who might have services more directly matched to your needs. But for as long as you are ready to keep working at it, we’ll be there for you.
